I had a skin Graft on my right ear drum in 82 caused by a diving accident were I encountered a reverse squeeze while surfacing ...I make my living as a Diver so decided the Operation was the only way to go to continue my Career after three months I started diving again and since that time have done just over 15.000 dives…. my question is this the Norm for this type of Operation to continue diving ...I’ve had no problems since
Thanks
Larry

I'm not at all sure that you will ever find a "norm" in the situation that you are describing! Surely you must have had an excellent TM repair from your skin graft; but, even this good result would not have happened if you had not had good Eustachian tube function with normal clearing of the middle ear.

Individuals with healed ear drums from tympanostomy tubes, perforations, skin grafts and monomeric ear drums can all dive again - if the have normal clearing processes.

Thanks for the Reply ..The incident I attribute to my GP Doctor and not finding the trauma to the ear drum and then giving bad advice to dive again to soon …it seems my outer ear canal does not allow for total viewing unless viewed by an ear nose and throat specialists microscope and when I finally saw one it was to late and the hole would not heal

The same thing happened to me. Next week im having surgey on my ear but my ENT is going to "patch" my eardrum and see if that works before doing the graft. Have you had any trouble equilizing while descending or ascending after the graft and is there any disconfort..
