I did my OW in Cairns in Jan 04 and will be visiting KL in August. I want to dive Sipadan but have read that it doesn't suit new/novice divers (strong currents etc). Any views & experiences?

While I'm in Malaysia, I'd like to take my Advanced OW- any tips on well-regarded training operators in Sabah?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

I dived there after a relatively small number of dives and didn't find it too much of a problem, as long as you are carefull.

for your AOW, Borneo divers have a training facility operating out of the TAR park just by KK. In KK you can also organise cheaper rates to Sipidan with BDivers (cheaper than rates they'll quote you over email).

have fun

I don't think you will have problems diving Sipidan. Depending on the time of day, there are some strong currents at some sites. Overall though it was easy diving, just communicate with your divemaster about your experince level to make sure both of you are comfortable with the conditions.
Declan is right about the cheaper prices availble through the Borneo Divers office in Kota Kinabalu. Just be aware that if they happen to be fully booked when you show up you might not be able to get the exact dates you are wanting, It would be good to be flexible if you use this approach.
I had a very good experince dealing with Allan Mah at Sabah Divers, located in the same building as Borneo Divers in KK. He is a SSI instructor certifier and Padi master instructor and a great guy to boot. You shouldn't have any problems getting you AOW in Sabah.
Have fun!!!
