Hello fellow SB'ers

I am planning to head out to Mabul in early July for a fun filled week of diving Sipadan Mabul and Kapalai!!! Wow, that feels great to say:D

Any info from folks who have been there or who are researching to go around the same time would be great.

Thanks

Do you have any specific questions. I have been on Mabul for the last week and coming here three times a year. July is a pretty busy month and there can be winds that make the crossing to Sipadan a bit bumpy. On the other hand, early March is not very good for visibility. At Sipadan the visibility has been pretty terrible for the last week. When diving the Mabul area try diving "Mid-Reef" near Kapalai. There is a good collection of creatures - Nudibranchs, Robust Ghost Pipefish. For some time there has been a Flamboyant Cuttlefish in the area.

Only that you'll be horribly spoiled for the rest of your diving life. Sure, there will be other locations that are great, but if you haven't been to this area of the world yet, your standard of a "great dive" are about to elevate very much.

Having visited, but not an expert on the area, I prefer the macro life on Mabul and Kapalai. If you want some of the larger stuff (sharks, turtles, bumphead parrotfish) then you're going to be amazed at Sipadan.

But that's what made it so outstanding - each island filled a particular role in the total experience.

I now gauge each major purchase as a percentage of a trip back there. Lets you know what my priorities are...

Ditto on Pearldiver07's comment. It is an amazing area. We were there in Dec 07 during monsoon season. The week before we arrived had horrible vis but we had great vis for 9 out of 10 days but even on a bad day Sipadan is still great. Here is the link to my trip report.

And you can find photos and videos from the trip by clicking on the links in my signature.

Have a great trip.

Where did you book your trip--via the website or other means? There are a group of 6 of us who will arrive in Kota Kinabalu July 8 and have 4 days available before we need to be in Lahad Datu and I'm the one to do the research and book the spot--sounds like Mabul is the best place to be as we have one couple who are just getting certified, the rest of us are long term vacation divers--just returned from diving in Uttila. Thanks for any of your thoughts

I used Save-Money-Diving for our trip to Sipadan in DEC 07 when we stayed on the LOB MV Celebes Explorer and at Borneo Diver's Mabul Island resort. Also used them in 2006 for a Sea of Cortez LOB. Monica was my agent both times. Did everything via the internet and it went smooth as silk.
