I always have a couple of bottles of Laphroig in the house - another single malt I quite like, although not from Islay, is The Balvenie

My favorite Islay is definitely Lagavullin 16. To my taste it is much more developed, sophisticated, smoother, and classier than most of the other Islays. As far as Fiddich/Dullan/Spey is concerned, I'd love to try The Balvenie Cask 191, but as I believe they only produced about 83 very very expensive bottles I guess I'll never know. I would have loved the opportunity to sample their Vintage Cask 1972 as well. Their Portwood 21 is awesome, though! Glendronach is another very good Spey that I like. Of course, none of this is half as good without the company of a nice Opus X, or perhaps a Zino Platinum Crown, in the other hand!

Single malts are not usually in my price range and I don't like most blends, I tend to sip cognac when I want to feel decadent. Last week end after a yacht race another owner in our fleet walked past and asked if anyone drank single malt. He gave me 3/4 of a bottle of Lagavulin 16, saying it was like drinking charcoal. I may be ruined for life. That stuff is good!!!

Obviously the yacht owner is a nouveau riche philistine and has no true appreciation for fine whisky. His uneducated palate has been your gain.

Slainte.

At the time, my first glass of Lagavulin wasn't exactly an experience that I'd like to repeat... :11:
