Thanks again for the help.

I am really looking to book a 7 night liveaboard - have decided to blow the budget and go for probably SoF or Mike Ball. But if I want to spend a few days just chilling in the area, I'm advised to just take the boat from Cairns but stay in Port Douglas as it's nicer - do you guys agree?

DITTO! I love Port Douglas and spent time there in 2006 and 2008 after liveaboards.

In 2006, I spent some time in the Daintree....it was definitely worth the effort!

Port is definately smaller, and more relaxed than Cairns. If you wanted to really get away from it go further north to Cape Tribulation (the Daintree) and stay ak PKs Jungle Village, or go south to Mission Beach (1 3/4 hours drive south) which is beautiful beaches and rainforest you can really chill out.

Dunk Island resort can be visited by water taxi (10mins), and it really is a nice place to relax. Mission Beach has about 4 hostels and camp sites with probably a few hundred popluation.

As for the boat trips SOF and Mike Ball are definately the top 2. If you havent already got details you can find them here with discounted prices.
