My wife is scheduled to be a guest lecturer for the 3rd grade class at the school she teaches at. She would like to discuss scuba diving and show the kids some of the pictures that we have taken, as well as let them see the gear a diver uses.

Does anyone know of a site that has some basic diving concepts explained at a 3rd grade level?

Sorry, couldn't resist.

I've done this twice for my Wife's Kindergarten class. The kids loved it. As far as explaining physics and what not, I would just stick to showing them the gear and pictures. You can go over safety type issues and simple terms, but if you try to go into theories and protocals you will lose them. She can try explaining the process of getting ready for a dive, gearing up, etc.. and then show the pictures and let them ask questions. Most will be about sharks anyway ;)

I give a SCUBA presentation to my students every year. I walk into the classroom in full gear (fins, mask, BCD, and tank). They love it. I show how the air comes from the tank to the reg. I then hand out a few 2lb weights for them to examine. Use the kind that look like bean bags. They are amazed. The rest of the presentation I show pictures of me in the water, fish, healthy coral and dead coral, and then explain that coral is really a living creature that provides food and shelter for other creatures, and the ramifications of the dying coral reef system. Keep it simple. They will then have a million questions, most of which are on the subject of sharks. Have fun!

I spend a lot of time working around children and the previous advice is right on. They'll be enthralled with the equipment and fascinated with the concept and the pictures. You really wouldn't have to say anything, but keep it simple. They'll ask you cute little questions and as said before, they'll want to know about sharks.

You're giving them more credit than most of them deserve..... 3 year olds squabble less and make more sense.

then about the topic at hand:

I've never given a scuba demo for little kids but I have a couple of little kids and they and their friends do just like what PAM was saying. Just play with the gear and look at pictures..... In fact several of my kids' favorite bath toys are old bits of diving gear.....LOL The underwater flashlights are a BIG hit..... I also have an aquarium and the combination flashlight and aquarium is something they may well remember into adulthood.... LOL (now if they just weren't so damned dangerous for my fishes...)

I've done it for a preschool class....they were totally fascinated by everything. Pam's demonstration is perfect for kids that age range. It's really rewarding.

I did a presentation for a combination 1st / 2nd grade class. I agree with everything above. They loved putting the fins on. & Christmas tree worms were a big hit in the slide show. & if she's as lucky as me she'll get a great collection of thank you drawings from the kids.

Hey, that reminds me of when I was a kid, probably 6 or 7 years old. Mrs. Maggie, a PE instructor for elementary school came into my classroom. She was showing all her Scuba gears and explaining simple things like what does she have to do with her gears - for example, she demo that she puts the regulator in her mouth. Man I was amazed by all that stuff. Guess what? I don't remember what she says but I remember what she demo all stuff!!!! I was soo impressed!

So don't worry what you have to say, just showing your gears off and of course, let them ask you tons of questions!!!

Have fun!
