If you use the strobe, you don't need the filter. The filter would only be for natural light shots or if you shoot video with the camera.
I think my friend has a G11 or G12 also, it shoots decent video. There is some time limit on clips IIRC also.
Shoot something white as a reference also, if you later have to WB during editing, it will be easier. Many people use a slate.
