ok.. so I am OW certified.. but havent looked into getting equiptment til now (a year later) and I am looking for some equiptment for when I go scuba diving in the keys this summer. A BC.. does that include the Regulator? or is that separate? How many regulators do you need..lol I have seen primary, secondary, octopus.. etc. I know you personally need one and then there is one extra in case of emergency with your diving partner, but I jsut am confused. I guess I am asking, what all I need to buy to have a full fledge gear set up. I know you need a tank, BC, weight belt (if it isnt built-in), mask, regulator (is it included in the BC?), fins, and a wetsuit (if needed). am I missing anything? thanks for any help!

First thing I would suggest is taking your open water class... this will help familiarize you with all the equipment and how it works. Let us know how it goes!

Trust me, you're not at the point of worrying about equipment !:D

Check in to a class. Take it from there and slowly !

All you should need to start are mask, fins, snorkel.
Wetsuit perhaps if your LDS requires one.

Once you've started in with your class materials the rest of your questions will be answered.

Agree with AmyJ......it appears as though you are not certified or you would have a better understanding about equipement.

If you have irresponsible friends that are trying to get you to dive....or are letting you dive....untrained......pls let me take a special insurance policy out on you. You are flirting with death.

Seriously, diving is a dangerous sport. You do not have to go really deep to get hurt. Get certified and the course will teach you all about the gear.

When it comes to buying different types of gear, you will certainly get some advice here....but get certified first. (Catch the continuous thread?)

Please forgive me, but am I to understand that YOU ARE OPEN WATER CERTIFIED ???

Kraken, Maybe they didnt use gear in the OW class.

yeah, I am OW cert... I know how to use everything, just wasnt too clear about the regulators. I took the course at a church camp, we used what they supplied and were given the explanation of everything, just not what to look for when going out and buying it.

When you buy a reg, you get the first and second stage. You are also required to purchase a "octo". The other basic things coming off of your first stage is a hose for your power inflator and one for your guages

this really, really, really should have been covered in your OW class, which makes me wonder what else wasn't covered?

basically, you will need a first stage (which attaches to your tank) and two second stages (which attach to the first stage)

one second stage is your primary, and goes in your mouth

the other second stage is your secondary (or octopus) and is stowed somewhere in your chest area or around your neck on a bungee loop.

however, instead of an independent secondary (as described above) some people use an secondary that attaches to the BC's inflator hose.

when you buy a regulator, it will include a first stage and one second stage.
you then need to buy another second stage separately to use as your secondary (octo)
