Similan Overnight from Patong?

Will be in Phuket Dec 14-22. Looking to do and overnight dive trip to Similan. Seems most of the DS's drive you to Khao Lak to catch a boat from there. Do any run trips stright from Patong or nearby without and early morning van ride?

Also, how early do I need to to book for that time of year? I'd prefer to wait until I get there and can talk to some shops in person? Will trips book up in advance or can I wait? Its our first trip to Thailand....

For a short overnight trip (2 days/1 night or 3 days/2 nights) the trips will always involve a transfer by minibus first.
If you take a 4 days/4 nights trip or longer, some of the boats will depart from Phuket, either Patong or Chalong.

That time of year for any trip: book ahead of time.

Yes Stevenl is right, you should book in advance at this time of year, although there are some good last minute deals around.
