The distance from Lanta to Hin Daeng is not much less than Khao Lak to Similan. A rough look at some charts suggests about 52km from Lanta to Hin Daeng (will vary depending on departure point), and 60km from Khao Lak (Thap Lamu pier) to Similan Islands. If it took 3 hours from Lanta to Hin Daeng, must have been on a slow boat...All the day trips to the Similan Islands from Khao Lak are by fast speedboats.
