There are a few different factors ......Mikey123:
1) not so high that you hit your head on the valve and 1st stage when you look up while diving.
2) not so low that you can't reach the valve when diving
3) ideally, it would be positioned such that as the tank gets lighter as you use the gas that it doesn't affect your trim.
For me, the best location with an AL80 is such that, when tilting my head back all the way while horizontal, the back of my head just hits the valve. YMMV.
