What sort of knot should be used to attach (backup light, SPG) equipment to bolt snaps? I am trying to find the right knot for it. I do not think a standard square not would be right but I want to make sure. Thanks in advance

use a cave knot. Make sure you use nylon braided line, not twisted line.

There are a couple of links. The real trick is to make sure the knot is tight and really melt the ends of the line (so you get a big glob of molten line then use the stub of the lighter to smoosh it down -- that ensures it wont come undone)

Thanks to the both of you. Looks like I have some things that need to be redone. As fo the line I am using it is coming right off a DiveRite Spool so I am guessing it is cave line.

Yeah, should be the right stuff.
It seems that as with all things diving, you have to screw it up a few times before you get it right :)

I'm just off to retie all my SPG's and 2nd stages as I used boltsnaps that are too small for the thicker gloves I am now wearing -- practice makes better!

When was that written? What about breakaways on the SPG, isn't that vogue now?

I am not an authority by any means, but my understanding is *no* breakaways of any kind. Everything is tied with caveline. (of course, now someone will go and prove me wrong).

Also, probably the original poster now needs a web link to a bowline knot to re-tie his spool :)

I use breakaways on almost everything. Usually an o-ring. For example on the SPG, I taco the o-ring around the hose and tie the knot around the o-ring.

The purpose of breakaways is that if it get entangled and you can't get to the clip for whatever reason you can break it free.

This exact topic came up in another discussion a while back, and someone recommended a figure-of-nine knot to retie the spool loop. I recently liberated my spool of about 3' of line to tie some snaps and retied the loop with the figure-nine, and then a figure eight for the small loop at the top, and it seems very secure and cleaner looking than the bowline knot.

Hmm, whatever works I guess.I wasn't aware of those knots. Have only seen the bowline. Maybe I will give it a go sometime.
