Dear All,

In my quest for extra silicon Grease, i was wondering if there is a special kind of silicon grease to use for the underwater housing or is just about any industrial silicon grease (of higher purity ofcourse) applicable?

best regards

thank you

1. You might get a better answer in the Photography forum. (Report your own post and request thread be moved, if you choose to do that.

2. From my limited Experience, Sea and Sea has a special grease for some of their O-rings. Any other grease damages the O-ring and deteriorates its effectiveness.

3. Most people prefer to use food-safe (non-toxic) silicon grease to protect our underwater environment.

I was wrong. Deleted

Some o-rings should not be lubricated, check what the manufacturer recommends.

You actually cannot report your own post but you can use the report icon on hers or mine to ask it be moved.

 I can report my own post . . . . Use that little triangle with the "!" inside.

I was wrong. Hate it when that happens.

Depends on the manufacturer. Some use silicone o-rings, some Nitrile, ect. The wrong lube can cause swelling of the o-ring. Best bet is to contact manufacturer of the housing and find out what the o-ring is made of and recommended lubricants (if any)

agree with tr3a.
i do only have Ikelite housings and they come with their own silicone to put on the o-rings. so definitely make sure that you have to put something on to the o-rings before you do it ;-) and maybe the manufacturer says something on his homepage.

apart from that there is no real difference between the silicone-qualities you put on the o-rings. just one tip: don't clean it every time you used it (if you use it a lot in a short period of time, like on a live-aboard). in fact i hardly ever put something on the o-ring and if so only in the beginning of the trip and most of the time i don't open the case anymore since i'm leaving the same lens on the camera for the whole trip.

by the way: just made some new photos and put them on my facebook-page (in the signature). feel free to like my page if you like what you see ;-)

Yeah, I shoot Sealife cameras - no silicone grease!

I use some on my mustache, dive lights, etc. I got a 3 oz tub from a hardware store once for those, eventually ran out - sharing and all, and ordered one from some dive supply.

Anyway, ask your camera manufacture if and what kind...? :dontknow:

Is that because the O rings are made of silicone?

For an O ring made of silicone what's the right grease?
