I went to Cozumel and I swear that I'll never return without a signal device!!! I saw on one of my dive a big and beautiful eagle ray but I was just not able to signal other divers since they were not looking in my direction...too late the eagle was gone! So I would like to know which signal device is better....Dive Alert, Mini-Hammerhead, etc, etc..

Thanx everyone!

The dive alert is for above water.....works like fertilizer below the water. The Mini Hammerhead isnt bad....as good as the Sub Duck....but if you get either....dont become a pain in the pattutee by honking every few seconds. It gets dang irritating.

On our last trip to Cozumel, our DM had a very effective signaling tool that I am going to acquire myself: Just a couple of largish metal carabiner clips, clipped together.

Hold one, shake it around, and it rang just like an old-fashioned triangle chime ... it wasn't too loud, but it was distinctive.

I imagine one would have to experiment with the clip size and material to get a set the rings well.

Cheers,
Walter

Never thought about that. I will have to give that a try with a couple from my climbing gear and see what it sounds like underwater.

I like the fact that they could have secondary uses if needed.

Thanks,
Mike

On dive boat ops like these I generally try to stay as far away as possible from the noisemakers.

My buddy is always close enough to get my attention with a hand gesture. All the other clanks, clacks, honks and beeps are an annoyance. If it means that I'll miss the event that somebody else thinks is more important than what I'm doing, so be it.

Not trying to be mean, just another point of view about noisemakers.

All the best, james

U/W Rattle,

I know this isn't the DIY forum, but you can make a rattle with a 6 inch piece of 1/2 inch copper tube two end capps and a few ball bearings. Seems to work ok. Just put ball bearings in tube and solder ends on to seal it. Make sure you solder, with bearings at opposite end though.

Another trick along the same line is a large boltsnap or double ended boltsnap. Click it to get the attention of your buddy; rap it on your tank for longer distance signalling.

I used to clip one off to my chest D-ring, but nowdays I leave it behind and just scream into my reg. Or I warn my buddies that if they hear an owl underwater, that they should look my direction, and then go whooooo whoooooo whooooo into the reg. Perhaps it works so well because it resonates in the big empty airspace of my skull ;)

...........I have tried several noise makers both comercial and homemade. This one is great. It is nice and small with a big noise. The only problem is everytime I travel I end up giving it away. I have bought 6 of these in the last year.

BTW, who said nothing good ever came out of Canada <grin>

if you don't want to DIY, here is a product i've seen in action.

http://www.scubatoys.com/store/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=TridentShaker

some people had it in Roatan last wk, it worked well.
I'm waiting for mine to arrive from scubatoys.

.......the H2yo is a handiery size and costs about half as much.

Try both you will find yourself wanting to give your Trident away but everyone trying to talk you out of the H2yo.
