but there are 2 main draw back to the sigma 50mm Macro lens and that is that the lens changes in length as it focuses which can make it a pain to work with. Also the other disadvantage to this lens is that if you have auto focus turned on you can not focus the lens manually it must be set to manual focus to focus manually.

Vs. the 60mm macro lens which does not change its length even when you focus to 1:1. and you can manually focus the lens even when auto focus is activated. i think that these to thing are worth the extra 50-100 hundred dollars for the canon lens and that is the one that i went with got mine on ebay for around 32o bucks new.

These are excellent points :)

I know I wouldn't give my 60mm up while using my 20D!

Thanks guys all good points, maybe the 60mm would be a better option. Correct me if I'm wrong but using a longer focal length lens eg.100mm etc, I wouldn't be able to get
as close to the subject as with a 50 or 60mm. Most of my macro is done in murky NZ waters, when the vis is good the longer focal length would be great, not being so intrusive on the subject etc. Most of the time it is not that clear.

I'm looking at getting a Sigma 50mm DG EX lens for Macro on my Canon 400D. Has anyone used one? or got some sample photos.

It's a great lens. I use it alot on a 20D. Fast, no vignetting. As for cropping, the Canon 400D has a 1.6x crop factor, thus the 50mm is actually an 80mm lens in 35mm format.

Just sayin'...

Hi

Bigfrog - Does the sigma 15mm fish eye has the same effect as the 50mm as per discribed by you? Was thinking of acquiring the sigma 15mm to save a couple of dollars.

Alcina - Was wondering which lens would you recommend for underwater....I currently have 60mm but thinking of getting some other lens (all purpose lens for underwater). I use a Canon 300D.

Thanks

no i was using the 15mm fisheye lens as an example of a lens that was better than the one that cannon offers this lens is great but is not what you want for macro work

this is info is referring to the 50mm macro.

Hi - I've moved your question to me here so we don't hijack aquakiwi's specific thread on the Sigma 50mm macro.
