Depending on how many bags you have to lug, you can just walk across the street from the airport to Diego's taqueria, have yourself some awesome fish or shrimp tacos, and then catch a cab right there. There are usually taxi drivers waiting outside Diego's, but if there aren't any just ask them to call one for you.

I believe there is now a Taxi stand accross from Diego's. There prices have unofficially gone up so best to negotiate in pesos and pay in pesos. Taxi exchange rate is 10 pesos per dollar (vs ~ 16.5 to 1). Paying in dollars will definitely be at disadvantage.

If you're in a hurry, then why are you going to Cozumel?

This. I take off my watch and go on Island Time once I have checked my bags at the airport on the way to Cozumel.
