Shutter release knob falling off

Is it possible when you buy a brand new Ikelite housing that the shutter release knob is permantly attached or glued on as I have had both knobs fall off on my D80 and D90 housing whilst underwater and to rub salt into the wound, whilst diving with Manta Rays. Lucky with the D90 as I could still use the video to get some shots but couldnt take any stills.

Jean what glue do you recommend for those that already have housings and want to attach the shutter release black know more securely?

I assume that is a full sized housing.

There should be an allen wrench included with the housing that will tighten the knobs on the housing. You will see on the side of the knob where to tighten. Unless you bought it used and they did not include that. In that case, you can easily find one at a hardware store.

I don't think the knobs are glued on, but I don't have one in front of me at this second.

Or I could be completely misunderstanding what you are referring to.

I was referring to the little black plastic knob which makes direct contact with the cameras shutter release.

We use a Cyanoacrylate Ester adhesive for control tips. It is basically the same thing as Super Glue or Krazy Glue. You can purchase a small tube at a local drug store, such as a CVS or Walgreens. Place a small drop of the Super Glue on the end of the control shaft and then gently press on the control tip. Rotate the control tip as you are installing so the glue is evenly dispersed. Do not use Super Glue on the housing plastic for any reason.

But why isnt the shutter release knob glued in the first place? If it was glued in why is it so easy to come off. Had this happen to both my Ikelite D80 and D90 setups.

Not a happy camper when i see the little black knob on the bottom of my housing and the shutter release lever can not touch the camera's shutter release and I have a 4m Manta with me for a whole hour.

I am sorry to hear about the tips falling off... We do glue tips onto the controls in dSLR housings in production. Unfortunately the smooth surface of the stainless control shaft doesn't provide the ideal conditions for creating a strong glue bond.

Might I suggest that the stainless control shaft have a threaded end and the black rubber knob screw into it. Cant see it having any issues with it falling off then. Even without glue.

Is it really that much of an issue? We've only had our housing on one trip so far but definitely didn't have an issue with anything coming unglued or falling off. Are you just unlucky or is this something that just eventually happens to them all?

Sometimes it happens to various controls, the fix is easy. A drop of super glue on the end of the shaft and reinstall rubber with a twist. In a emergency almost any glue would work.
