Is there any good lake or quarry/pit diving between shreveport and New Orleans ? any help would be appreciated.

I stay in the New Orleans area atleast one night a week for business. I visited a few local shops in Metairie and they all told me that you have to go by boat to the rigs or drive to FL(guess they didn't know AL had diving? 
). Apparently, there are some people who dive Lake Poncetrain, but I'm not sure if I want to put my gear through about 40 different state's run-off...
