Wooooo I loved it! Amazing creatures! Out of interest where did you film this? From what I've learnt (correct me if I'm wrong) the squid are common in deep waters, but often not within recreational depth limits. As the diver who got grabbed had chainmail on can I assume that you actually went out looking for them?

Cheers, Simon

I am a bit late with this.

Here is a short video clip that I shot with my Canon Powershot A70 in movie mode. The sound makes it interesting. I guess the little fish was not too impressed that we stopped to watch.

Unfortunately, the streaming video may pause about two thirds of the way through. Wait for the big FinISH.

The crunch sound at the end of the video is, well.... you should get the idea. http://www.clipshack.com/Clip.aspx?id=035B4532A028098D

humbolt attack...

damsel attack....

soon we'll have to wear "Neptunic Shark suits" on coral reef dives!

Simonspear,

We got those shots in under 70 feet of water. The bottom was at 1000+, but we where suspended by steel cable at around 70 feet. We set up our boat so it would drift through the area where the fleet of fishermen fish for the Giant Humboldt. The fishermen would fish all night, at about 10:00am we would go and then drift through the area with HD cameras and Neptunic suits. As you can see, when you do it right you run into shoals of giant humboldt squids still roaming the upper shallows after light, looking for prey. When they come at you you can grab the tentacle as they come in and it messes up their plan. They still can get ahold of you though. We send our film to people to review. Some sell it, Some use it for research. On the side we take people on the actual dive so they can take their own pics and video.

It feels like a piece of kelp was wrapping around my leg, then I remembered that there was no kelp in 1000fsw.

It all started because my buddy wanted to see a "real" sea monster.....he's crazy.....I was just there to get the shots...

By the way, Ive been hit by those damsels too, and my friend got bit by a small dorado...go figure.

Its not the size of the fish in the fight its the size of the fight in the fish....

Hi all, I've uploaded a load of new clips to my underwater videos page.

I hope you like them! I'll be adding more in due course.

I'm also now selling a marine life DVD of the best of my footage from the last 4 years in Thailand and Burma.

Nearly all of this was shot with a Sony VX2000 in Gates housing.

Yeah, I think I still have a Damsel scar on my forehead from a similiar encounter... Territorial little *******s.

Me too! One in Cozumel bit the top of my head! All I got from the "attack" was a still picture; as I didn't have a video funtion with that set up.

I had no idea that they would still be at the surface that late in the morning. Thanks for the info....it's going to go down on my long and growing list of things I want to see! From your location can I assume that this was somewhere off the coast near San Diego?

Cheers, Simon

Negative Simon,

I have a house in San Diego, my trips are in Baja. The squid are down by Loreto in the Sea of Cortez.

This is the first underwater video I shot with Mini DV as opposed to the QuickTime movies my digital camera takes. It was taken while diving in Cathedral Cove on East Anacapa Island, which is one of California's Northern Channel Islands.

The site hosting this video offers four options on the size of the picture. Don't click on the 1500k option unless you have a high-speed cable or T1 modem (it was touch and go with my DSL - I had better luck with the 700k size).
