Pasley!!:
Not to hijack this thread (by the way Crescent and Deadmans are by far my favorite Laguna Beach sites followed by Treasure Island, Fishermans/divers cove, woods cove) but it appears that there have been some busy beavers in Laguna Beach in the short time I have been gone. What is this bouy you speak of? Inquiring minds in Kansas (Ft. Riley for a few more days at least) want to know. Will I recognize my old dive spots when I return in a year?
Melvin!!! Good to hear from you, man!!! Ft. Riley, huh?? And dreaming of diving while we all do our best to keep the U/W show running around here without the Irreplaceable YOU!!

You are missed, my friend!

And you are thought of often, and mentioned fondly, in many a beach-dive parking lot!!!

Take good care of yourself.. we all need you back here when the important work is done.

Are we diving yet?

Claudette

Claudette,
Yep, still cooling my heals here in Kansas. I appreaciate everyones support and it warms my heart when I can log in and see the candle burning in the window at home in the form of the Pasley Dive reports.

I am doing the old Army hurry up and wait. I can't say anymore on that subject, but I am organizing my gear and packing and hope I will not have to wait too much longer.

We swim 1 mile in a pool once a week and that is a welcome break from the runs we do the rest of the week. One day a week is team sports day. Last week we played soccer. I had a lot of fun, but my ankle and knee reminded me a couple of hours later of my, ummm, life experinence level. The doctor said 7 days of no running, so I walked the next day, then a day of swimming and on Friday a short 3 mile run. Soccer is a great sport, great for turning old legs into jello. Still sore. But we did have a lot of fun and got some good exercise in too.

I have linked up on the net with some other divers here in Kansas and hope to meet them face to face in the next few days. Doubt we will get to go diving as I do not have any gear with me and my pending travel plans.

In the meantime I will enjoy diving through everyones postings. How is Marineland doing? Have they started construction yet?

Hey -- Hey -------Have you found Dorthy,Toto, and the yellow brick road yet? :)

Hi Melvin! There is activity at the site for the first time in many months. They are clearing the old hotel rooms between the parking lot and the dirt road down to Cobble Beach. The Circular building at the top of the road is GONE! Completely gone!!! They say they are clearing the debris for the purpose of safe public access down to Cobble Beach... Gee, just think of the risk we've been exposed to all these years!!:11: Guess it's a good thing we're all good at what we do!

Today was a splendid day at Marineland: Hot and sunny, but with a great ocean breeze ruffling the water surface. Ken and I got his big camera rig easily (or smartly... or luckily....) through the small surf out at the point. We descended directly onto a great pinnacle with 15 foot vertical exposed walls at about 30fsw. Then (contrary to the last All-Sand-All-The-Time tour,) we explored from one fantastic big pinnacle to the next for 45 minutes. It was only 59F down around 50-65 fsw, but hundreds of nudibranchs continue to cover the rocks. We found 14 distinct species of nudibranchs, and Ken photographed 13 of them (The Navanax was huddled covertly under a gorgonia, refusing autographs and photos...) We managed to fin about half way back to Cobble beach, surface swim the rest, and walk out of the surf unmolested. It's good to be lucky at Marineland. Visibility was 20 to 30 feet, depending on the depth. Surprise sights: Rubberlipped perch in several groups of 5 or 7. (At least that's what the book calls them... somehow I translated it to "LubberRips" afterwards, which still sounds so funny I'm laughing out loud again! "LubberRips." I guess my numbs are lipped  )

You will LOVE getting back to all this on your return, I know. We'll try to keep it swept up and looking good :D .

It's all easier on "experienced" knees than is soccer! You are tough, rolling around the soccer field full-tilt until the doc sidelines you!!!

Take good care of yourself and please stay in touch.

Thanks!
Claudette

Hey Mel,

You are truly missed all over SoCal. Like Claudette said, your name pops up all over the place. The dives are just not the same without you. Take care of yourself, and get back here to us, safe and ready to dive.

It's soooo true, Rick!!

I take a new person to Marineland, and I hear Mel's wise words of caution in my head. If I took anyone in there, in conditions beyond their ability, and we got hammered, I'd have to answer to Mel for my stupidity. Keeps me honest and careful.

I read posts from out-of-town visitors asking about shore diving OCal, and I think, "Too bad they'll miss that special "Mel guidance and generosity," that only Mel could offer if he were here at home." It'll be so good when he's back.

I climb the long hill at Marineland, after a great hour and a half dive, and think how much Mel will enjoy it when he gets back... and that he would have come up with more air left in his steel 72 than I had in my water-heater-130!!!!

Missing you, Mel!! Take care!

Claudette

Thanks guys and gals for all the kind words. I really appreciate them.

While I sit around here waiting the dining facility serves good food. I have not seen a scale since May 7th when I left home, but I would wager I have added a few pounds. I spend my time daydreaming about past dives and making plans for future dives.

I miss each and every one of you and look forward to seeing you all. I about a 9 days it will be three months since I left home and only 15 more to go. My how time flies when you are having fun.

Now you all go out and go diving and don’t forget the detailed dive reports. I live to read about your adventures and live vicariously through you and your dive adventures. It is my only source of amusement here in Kansas.

So, Melvin,

You've put on a few pounds there in Kansas, huh? This may mean that you are no longer able to cut through the water like a knife. Maybe that's going to ruin your air consumption, so you'll only be able to get three 1-hour dives out of an AL80 instead of your usual four 1-hours dives. ;)

We all miss you and look forward to your safe return. We talk about you at dive sites all the time. You're going to have to wait until you get back to find out what we've been saying. :D

I'll see you soon, my friend. Be safe!

Christian

Well it appears the scubaboard block has been lifted! Good to see your avatar here!

I remember Crescent...early morning...whining about how early it was, how cold the water was, wondering what we were doing out there, then we dropped, swam to the reef, and the visibility exploded to 50' and the ocean reminded us why we were there...why we dived. What an inspiration that day was. Seventy three minutes of diving bliss; my tank was dry, you came up with what...1200 psi? :D

Our friends at Sport's Chalet have been looking for your tanks...well...they've been asking for you.

Stay safe...we'll dive again!

Russell
