OK, got the shoulder worked on last Tuesday. Ouch, ouch!! Just a dull pain now but it was pretty painful for a couple of days. Didn't want to take any of the meds so stuck it out. Just before I passed out my friendly surgeon says: "Oh, by the way, we aren't going to be able to do it with a couple of small cuts and scope like we discussed in the office yesterday. After more closely reviewing the MRI I've decided to make about a four inch cut over the top and....." Next thing I remembered was a bunch of people telling me to wake and it was over with. Thanks Doc. Anyway, I 'm sitting here trying to decide what part of the therapy I can ditch and get back in the water as soon as possible. I figure that I can start leg strengthening in the pool in a couple of weeks if I don't try to use my arms. Any suggestions or experience with that?

I had a hemi-shoulder replacement done a couple of years ago because of some repetitive shoulder injuries. I found and still find that the more I move my shoulder and exercise it the better it feels. My Doc and I decided I would skip the therapy and rehab the shoulder myself. My therapy started 24 hours after my surgery with passive movement. I started using therabands about a week later and now I am almost 100%. I still have some bad days as the joint socket is still mine and can be quite painful. Nothing that some exercise and a little IB wouldn't take care of. Grrrr guess I should have skipped the WW kayaking and gone straight to SCUBA.

Broke and dislocated my right shoulder while playing sports in High School. Cant remember how I dislocated the left one. Chronic dislocation of both followed over the years. At 40, I had surgery to fix them both. Range of motion post-op was about 35%. Six weeks of therapy was ABSOLUTELY necessary to attain 100 % range of motion. It WAS painful but without it, I would not be able to do the things I can do today 19 years later.
