Hey everyone, My wife and I will be in Grand Cayman in August for a week. We did a timeshare exchange. My question is should we purchase a dive package with one dive operator and save some $$ or Should we just book our dives separately? I have been to GCM once, but didnt dive. My wife is a newly certified diver. We will be staying near 7 mile beach.

You will probably get a cheaper rate on dives if you book a package. Most dive shops "sell" packages depending on the amount of dives,as you dive more the cost per dive goes down.Check with the dive op. you will be using.

A package will provide a bit of a break on costs. I would consider an operator like Dive Tech so that you would have morning boat dives and optional included shore diving afterwards at Cobalt Coast and Lighthouse Point at no additional cost. If shore diving is not part of your plans, then I would go with a more personalized operator like Wall to Wall, Off the Wall, Dive and Stuff or Living the Dream.

Check out http://caymansummersplash.com/#/offers/ they are running some nice offers for the summer season, you may find one of the deals useful.

I think there are more advantages to getting a dive package than just price. You mentioned your wife is newly certified. Based on your personal info, it appears that you don't have a lot of experience yourself. When my wife and I were beginning, we always seemed to spend the first couple days just getting somewhat comfortable with our skills, with the gear, with the divemasters and with the environment on the boat and in the water. If you go with different dive operators, that's going to change for you, daily, and it will be more difficult to find that relaxed comfort zone that really lets you enjoy the whole dive experience.

I'm assuming you'll be renting gear -- at least BCs and regs. Having a BC and reg that you can get used to and stay with for the week will help you that comfort zone much sooner. Similarly, operators like Sunset House and Divetech require all divers to use computers. (If you have a dive package with them, the computer is included.) I'm not sure what a dive operator would do if you showed up, say two or three days into your trip, and you didn't have your own computer to show your recent dive log and remaining non-decompression time. You'd probably have to switch to using tables, if that's allowed by the operator.

Getting used to the boat, the procedures and the dive staff is another benefit of going with one operator, one package. Each boat functions a little differently. But, more importantly, diving with the same staff can help you a lot. You get to know them and they get to know you. They'll quickly learn what to let you do on your own, what things to keep an eye on and when to get involved. If it's a very good staff, like Divetech, they'll make use of what they see in you and they'll help you improve your skills and comfort level. A DM that knows you're there for more than just one dive will also take more time to show you goodies and critters and will make more effort to help you enjoy your experience.

If shore diving in the afternoons and evenings appeals to you, then definitely go with a package. Again, there's the cost saving issue and more. As you dive with the group, you'll see who you want to dive with, and you'll find dive buddies for the shore dives. Not to mention the possibility of discovering and making new friendships that will extend beyond the week in Cayman.

There are shore dives available on Grand Cayman at Eden Rock,Sunset House,Cobalt Coast,Sundivers (Cracked Conch),Don Fosters,Lobster Pot,Dive Tech.....I'm sure I left out a few that have dive shops .

Thanks for all the feedback. GB_Williams: Yes there is much more than saving money and your points are well taken. I do have 27 dives, whereas my wife just got certified the weekend before last. I am very comfortable in the water as well as comfortable helping others out. Nonetheless, you bring up some very good points. I think we will go ahead and book a package deal after more research. Which leads me to my next question. What are some of your recommendations on dive ops? I have seen Divetech as a recommendation. How is the Sunset House? Again, we will be staying on Seven mile beach, and will also be renting a car. I am interested in doing some shore dives as well. I would like to also dive some reefs/walls, the kittiwake, and dive stingray city. When I was in GCM on a cruise we went to Stingray city, but I didnt dive, I think that would be an awesome opportunity to not only swim with the stingrays but to be diving with them too. Thanks again for the advice.

I have dove with Divetech, Sunset House, Don Foster and Treasure Island. My favorite, by far, is Divetech. Divetech picks up a number of divers on 7 Mile Beach -- as do a lot of ops. The only negative I have about Divetech is the cost of their Kittiwake dives -- $100 per diver. Although I haven't done the dive -- yet -- it seems very steep.

For trips to Stingray City, I'd recommend Don Foster. However, unlike years past, it's no longer possible to feed the rays yourself. Evidently, they were getting too fat. So, only DMs from the dive ops can profer the squid.

I hope you and your wife have a wonderful trip and lots of great dives.

You can still feed the sting rays on the snorkel.
