My wife was reading on the CDC that we need Hep A, Hep B, Rabies, etc for our trip to Fantasy Island, Roatan this June. What has everyone else had as far as shots when they went to Honduras? Thanks in advance for any help.

There's a good article on dive travel in this month's scubadiving mag includes shot's recommendations for all areas of the world. It may also be online.

Central America= Hep A+B, Yellow Fever, Typhoid, Tetanus/Measles and Malaria is specific to Honduras, Belize & Costa Rica.

I hope this helps.

When we go to Roatan, we take the malaria pre-meds, and make sure our Hep A and tetanus are up-to-date. All it takes is one bite.

Big Fic - we will be at FI this June 9-16 for our third time. When will you and the Mrs be there?

Hep A Hep B
Tetanus Typhoid
Malaria meds
Also MMR is you have not had.

It's your life - you choose!

Thanks everyone. Looks like I need to get some shots.
Dave,
We will be at FI the same week you are. I sent you a PM.

Brad

All you really need is hep A and malarone or chloroquine for malaria. Of course, you want your typhus / polio vaccines to be up to date.

Hep B is useful if you anticipate intimate contact with any locals; or for protection in case you are hospitalized and need local blood products.

Typhoid is not needed for roatan unless you are really roughing it. Yellow fever not needed.

It's always a good idea to have your tetanus shot, no matter where you're traveling.

Agreed, sorry I meant tetanus not typhus. You want to be up to date on it even if not travelling!

sorry to hijack....

but i was told i needed a handful of shots before travelling to south africa for a month. My friends that lived there told me i didnt need them - so i didnt get anything. And returned unharmed. Is it really that necessary?

I wasnt planning on getting anything. Headed there in 27 days......

Check the CDC website and read their recommendsations. A lot of people will be advised to do something, yet if they find someone who says it isn't needed they use that as an excuse not to.

You either are going to get them, or you're not. Why ask people on the internet that you don't even know? People continue to come up positive for the HIV virus. Is the information out there to keep one from getting it? Of course it is, people just pretend it won't happen to them. They got away with it before, must not be real then.
