We're thinking maybe Cancun early summer and I was wondering if there were any good shore dives nearby? We haven't been to the Caribbean yet so right now the trip is in the early planning stages. We have our own gear so we like to cut costs by doing shore dives and renting a condo with a kitchen and washer/dryer rather than stay in a hotel or resort. Recommendations welcome!!!

Sadly I am going to have to agree with Reidkon, neither Cancun nor the island opposite the hotel zone, Isla Mujeres, offers any worthwhile shore dives. If you have your own transportation and are willing to travel you can visit Puerto Morelos which is about half an hour south of Cancun for an OK shore dive just in front of Cielo Beach but be prepared for a strong current running from the south.

If you are really willing to travel, you can also visit the shore dive in front of Tikila Bar on Cozumel. I was there on Friday evening with an Open Water Student and we saw a bunch of white spotted eagle ray just 40 meters or so offshore.

I specialise in small group tours and so am not the cheapest when compared to some of my competition here in Cancun. However, if you decide to do a some boat diving, please feel free to get in touch for some quotes.
