There should be bubbles coming out. If it's an older model, there is a flow-by element in the piston. A technician with dirty fingers can clog it easily, or he may have cleaned it in the ultrasonic which sometimes can clog it. If you want, I can scan the manual and you can show it to him. Might be the first one he's seen.

I agree with Neil. Sounds clogged. Try it on a charged tank and see what happens.

If he was clever enough to do that, you may want to ensure he replaces it with the same model piston and not the newer, current one as they do not have the bleeder in them and your problem would persist.
But now you can see that sherwoods are a great all around reg. they are even easy for the comsumer to trouble shoot.

I just bought a (used) sherwood setup for draging through the sand here. (not literally dragging through the sand just seems that way shore diving) The first stage has the small black round rubber do hicky on the top is that the bleeder you are talking about because mine makes a hissing noise.. i figured it was suppose to even if it wasn't the depths are 15' - 20' shore diving around here.

I use two sherwood bruts as a cave rig for their reliability as there is no need for deep regs here, the "bleeding orifice" seems to be variable, sometines it seems to bleed a little more than others, some days hardly at all. In my book, no biggie.

I don't know if I would take them into caves with me but they are nice. Any fluctuation in the ip will result in the change in bubble stream. as well i find that when just serviced they bleed a little more.
