Hi! Has anyone been to the Sheraton Nassau Beach Resort lately? There's a trip being planned for mid June... just wondering if it is worth going on it.

What do you think of the resort? And what do you think of the diving there?

dd

I've never specifically been to the Sheraton - have been to the Casino next door but not lately.

The nearest dive operator from there is Bahama Divers located at the base of the bridge to Paradise Island. A rough guess would be 3-4 miles away. They'll pick you up. The other nearby dive operator - Explore Scuba on Paradise Island may not be there any more. At least their website isn't. http://explorescubabahamas.com/index.php

The (only?) other option is Stuart Cove's - it's a 25min shuttle ride to their location on the south side. They actually offer a package with the Sheraton. Stuart Cove

The viz is usually excellent, there's lots of sharks - Cove's does a feed - but they'll often be hanging around nearby sites also. In case you're not familiar with Nassau, shore diving is practically non-existent there - the reef is too far out.

I agree with diversteve's assessment of the diving/ops in Nassau.
Regarding the Sheraton, which is located in the Cable Beach section of New Providence:
We have never stayed there, but have stayed a number of times at the Wyndham, which is next door to the Sheraton-they are connected by a long corridor, beginning at the casino, and ending near the lobby of the Sheraton.
While the Wyndham has been going downhill over the last few years, the Sheraton had a major renovation a few years ago. In fact, we seriously considered switching mid-vacation, until the Wyndham solved our room problem.
If we return to New Providence, (in Aug. ???) we probably will stay at the Sheraton.

One caution: Last summer, we saw big signs-and the construction sites to support them-advertising the latest "Major upgrade to the Cable Beach area"-A massive construction project-new hotels, parks, etc.
It seemed like the Wyndham/Sheraton were located in a back corner of this area-second class citizens, if you will.
I heard rumors from the locals that the Wyndham (and possible the Sheraton???)were going "to go away" in favor of these new hotels-of course-no hotel officials would confirm that. The not so slow decline of the Wyndham might lend credence to those rumors-why upgrade/fix if we are going to close-be demo's etc??

If you find out more, please let us know.

I was at the Sheraton Nassau on Cable Beach about I guess 3 years ago. It was nice. and I would go there again. but it wasn't super exciting either.

The pool area was nice and the beach was nice. pool drinks were "reasonable" priced. (but not cheap by any means).

It's connected to the Wyndham by a 'tunnel' which is a shopping corridor. You have to go through the Casino's as noted above. The Casino's were pretty dismal. Nothing like Vegas Casino's.

Unless something has changed, you have use of the pool and beach at the Wyndham also.

CONSTRUCTION WARNING:

It's my understanding that at some point that the are tearing down both resorts and building a "mega resort" to rival Atlantis. I don't know if they've started this or now. You might want to google around and see if anyone is having any issues with this. they are supposed to tear down one first and then the other.

Thanks All!

Doesn't sound too appealing to me right now. And with no "unlimited" shore diving b/c the reef is too far out, it sounds even less appealing. Only 2 dives a day in the package.

I'm not into the big resort thingy, flowered drinks, etc, but for a 5 day trip I would consider it... I've been on some trips where the reef is too far out so no shore diving... I'm bored out of my skull at those places.

Wife and I went down for a quick getaway this winter. We rented a condo through VRBO and had good luck with that (condo came with a car, which was nice). The diving is very resort-like. You'll get short bottom times, but good conditions and nice scenery. I was a little on the bored side, but my wife the photog was happy. We'd probably go back, but I think I would not stay on the Nassau side - it's very congested up that way and we heard several guests who were less than satisfied with the larger hotels they were staying in.

Mike, here is a update regarding the Sheraton from TripAdvisor:

Road construction in front of the Sherton is done. The new West Bay Street corridor is open, and it's actually very nice. Nice walking path and landscaping. Plus they have wooden walkways and observation decks by Hobby Horse lake. There is construction going on for the Bahamar Resort, you'll see the cranes and such, but its well removed from the Sheraton. The new Pompey Village and re-located Daq Shack are across the street from the Sheraton. Construction noise??? You won't hear any. And you won't see or have to dodge giant construction trucks, as the construction site is self contained.

I will be there in May, hope the above report is true! :D

My daughter and I will be in Nassau staying at the Sheraton 16-23 May.
We are thinking of diving with Bahama Divers but have reserved the Stuart's Cove
shark dive on the 21 May. The rational of going with Bahama Divers is simply that they are closer to the
resort - hope they are good!?

@ finbob I will be there in May as well from 24 - 28 May 2012. When are you going?

It's a 10 minute or so ride to Bahama Divers.
a 25+ minute drive to Stuart Coves.

I'd base my choice on who might be the better operator or the dive sites you want.

Might want to consider doing a few days with each just to see some different dive sites.
