Here's a picture of a hermit crab in his shell - anyone got an idea of what the shell originally was? It was about 6" long, and my wife and I found the crab in a puddle on tidal flats in Fiji. We left him where we found him.

It's an auger shell, probably one species in the family Terebridae. If you have a copy of Allen & Steene's "Indo-Pacific Coral Reef Field Guide", there are 4 examples pictured in it.
 
Compendium of seashells has it as a Subulate Auger- Terebra subulata
