I have never had any problems with my Halcyon BP. The webbing still looks great.

Same here--- It was just that you seemed to be asking leading questions about Halcyon in past posts-- but if I am wrong than I am sorry. I have never heard of Halcyon plates wearing webbing too badly. But then I have only been diving for 15 years with 10 of them using BP. So I dont claim to know much. There are far more divers with greater expierence than myself.

IMHO-- all SS backplates are basically the same. The machines they are made from are just stamps-- so if there are sharp parts I dont see why taking out the Dramel would be unjustafiably out of line---Thats what the manufactures would do anyways. And Like you said shipping would kill you.

I wouldnt worry about buying a backplate from Halcyon or Fred or OMS or DR

Hope that helps

Later~

FredT will sell you either a finished or an unfinished plate. I got an unfinished FredT plate from AUL, and after around 20 dives, the wear is noticable. I didn't smooth the edges because I didn't want the webbing to slip, but when it gets to the point that I decide to replace the webbing, I'm going to file the edges & buy some more d-ring keepers to put behind the plate.

... I'd really like a Fred T plate, but the shipping may kill me, or I can wait until I go back to the states to pick one up. If I go with a total Halcyon setup, I can get it all locally.
You can *probably* get a FredT plate shipped out to you & still wind up paying less than if you bought a Halcyon locally in Japan.
Global Express doesn't cost much more tham airmail parcel post.
(I send stuff all over the world on an almost daily basis) ;)
Did you want stainless or aluminum?

Not Fred's, his are cut with a laser.

Thanks all
I am definitely going with SS. What I might do is get a complete Halcyon set up locally, then when I go to the US this summer, get a heavy SS plate from Fred T for drysuit use. I'll have to find out more about shipping and weight my options...

I have no idea how tall you are, but the one thing to keep in mind is that FredT makes extra long plates for those who are tall or have long backs. If you're over 6', you may want to get one from Fred, shipping be darned.

Nah
Unfortunately, the only place I am relatively tall is here in Japan...5'9"

Thanks for the calculator, BOB3

I like going to parades in places like that, I get to look out over the top of everybody's head. ;)
The interior of the Yucatan is like that, with all the Mayan folks.

Yup
I'm all set at movie theaters, too...
