Cousteau attacked by shark in special

ISLA GUADALUPE, Mexico, June 22 (UPI) -- A shark attack involving Fabien Cousteau -- captured on film off the coast of Mexico -- will be aired as part of an upcoming CBS documentary special.

"Shark: Mind of a Demon, with Fabien Cousteau," set to air on June 28, will feature famous oceanographer Jacques Cousteau's grandson Fabien as he attempts to swim with great white sharks, "Entertainment Tonight" reported.

The one-hour documentary was made, in part, to dispel the image of sharks as violent. Fabien Cousteau, who is joined by his sister Celine Cousteau on the project, uses a special "shark submarine" to swim with the dangerous creatures. The vehicle reportedly allows its user to imitate the appearance and motions of a great white shark, "Entertainment Tonight" said.

Did he get hurt or did it just attack the sub, if you know?

No idea. I guess not (because it's not mentioned)

2 interesting articles I found:

The last one is interesting. His father made an unmanned robotic shark called the Calypso:

Fabien opened a notebook where he had some pictures of the Calypso back in the days. [NOTE: This was a similar robotic shark made my his father] Fabien explained that after a few days of shooting the sharks had accepted this rather interesting specimen as one of their school, the dive team on the Calypso “probably getting bored” decided to make the robotic shark act erratic and ” injured”. Consequently, a large female turned on the shark and gave it a “death blow” which is a bite to the gills. She came back for several more and completely destroyed the robotic shark.

And now Fabien is swimming inside a similar construct.....

If these bozos were to try this sort of harassment (agitating an animal to the point of attach, or all that bit about playing with their electrosensors on their sides, etc.) with, say, lions or any mammalian species, there would be no end to it - and justifiably so. Yet they continue to get away with harassment in the name of education when it comes to sharks.

Every bloody TV show on sharks I see purports to "demonster" sharks and dispel the notion of sharks as dangerous - and yet, they always manage to end up focusing on how large, intimidating and potentially dangerous these creatures are. 29 minutes of cheap thrills and 1 minute of half-assed attempts of education do not qualify as seious documentary. That is like Jerry Springer claiming that his show helps resolve personal angst.

I'd hope the a shark takes a large bite out of the clown the next time, were it not for the fact that it would make their reputation even worse.

In case people are wondering at my strong response: I am really touchy about this, having seen the shark population in the Andamans being decimated over the last 4-5 years - to the point of no recovery, atleast not in my lifetime. Instead of focusing on trying to save these amazing animals. we have clowns like this, living off their family name, who persist in this sort of crap in the guise of research. "Mind of a Demon" - hmm, that sure sets the tone, doesnt it? F' em.

Whoa, I need to take a breath.

I believe the part where it talked about agitating the sharks was talking about when Fabien's father (is that Jean Michel or is that his uncle) did a similar thing with a robot shark sub. They have not actually said yet what provoked the shark to attack in this instance. That's not to say this documentary won't just be another similar to what you describe, but that we don't really know that yet.

True. I realize that I am being quick in condemning, but I have absolutely zero expectations of a show titled "Mind of a Demon", especially given the putrid track record of such shows to date.

It's like Shark Week on the Discovery Channel. They sandwich an honest to goodness educational blurb in between commercials during the programs that focus on shark attacks and the size and number of teeth.
