My goal is to be trained to be a northeast US recreational diver, which means lots of wrecks. I'm currently a warm water weenie and a little intimidated by the local diving (limited vis, environmental protection, no DM guide....) :icon10:

An instructor friend has agreed to teach me Advanced here in the northeast (New York) this summer. He's with NAUI. I chose him because the way he talks to his students is impressive, he's an active instructor, and I trust him with my life. However I get the idea that he doesn't do much northeast diving other than teaching.

We haven't had "the talk" yet where he'll tell me how to prepare, but we will soon. I do know that the 6 required dives will be done at Dutch Springs, a cold fresh water man-made lake where most schools do their training and he also mentioned maybe doing one shore dive (ocean, shallow). I have a few questions though.

1) What do I need to buy for the class? Reel? Slate? Books?

Because he's a friend I'm concerned he might try to "do me a favor" and make it easy for me. I know that an easy class won't be doing me any favors in the long run. I'd rather have a very difficult class so I'm better prepared for when he's not there.

2) What should I look out for? How will I recognise when he's being too easy on me?

3) To tailor the class for northeast wreck diving are there specific skills or lessons that I should ask he teach me?
