I shoot a Canon G11 with a Inon D2000w in Auto Mode, which I love, but I want to try sTTL so I will be familiar with it in the event that I change strobes, or use someone else's system. I'm used to shooting in dark, silty conditions, and have found that when I'm in good conditions, all of my photos are horribly lit and/or just overexposed. I'm thinking sTTL might afford me more options attacking the "good water" learning curve as well.

On to my question: What camera and magnet settings should have to use sTTL with my system? I tried out a few things this weekend, and ultimatly switched over to Auto because it was underexposing everything.

All help appreciated.

I use a Inon S2000 and a Canon S90, fiber optic cable connecting housing to S2000

I usually shoot in sTTL mode, with the mode switch set to 'B'.
Camera is set to flash ev -1 (-2 did not work out well), and flash output to -1

You should not need to use the magnet since the G11 has preflash (assuming D2000 is same as S2000)

Shooting in the dark, into a hole, etc.. is when I switch away from sTTL and use manual. Adjusting the strobe power till I get it right.
If its too dark the camera's autofocus won't work that well and it will have a hard time 'guessing' the settings to use.

Wow, this is a complex answer to be complete and it is late and I am tired.

The P setting on your camera overrides your manual flash setting in the camera menu. The sTTL setting on the strobe overrides the magnet switch position.

So, you should be able to shift to Program mode on the camera and go to sTTL on your D/S2000 and shoot good simulated TTL. Use the control knob on the strobe to lighten or darken and also your flash auto exposure control in the Func Set button on your G11.

With the D2000 you cannot shoot in Av/Tv and use the sTTL strobe mode unless--unless-- you remove the magnet and go into the menu on the camera and shift the camera strobe back to auto flash. This sets the camera back to a preflash configuration (but remember, in P and Auto mode on the camera dial preflash is always active). Manual camera mode, BTW, never preflashes.

To shoot sTTL in Av (or Tv I suppose) set the camera strobe to auto under menu, set the camera to Av, set your strobe power plus or minus. REMOVE the magnet (always install or remove with strobe OFF). You can also use the camera flash exposure compensation under Func Set button in this configuration to alter exposure.

To shoot in Av with External Auto (D2000 only), install magnet, turn camera strobe to manual under menu and set to lowest power setting for trigger signal only. Match f stop to camera and alter to suit exposure.

All Canon P&S cameras like the G/S/A series that have manual, Av and Tv setting have a similar menu and func configurations, yes, they do.

I have a G10 and Inon D2000 and am also trying to figure this out.
I was under the impression that if you put the magnet in and set the strobe to STTL it would still fire a pre-flash. Basically when in STTL the strobe ignores weather you have the magnet in or not?

So as long as you have the camera strobe set to auto you can use STTL and on the camera Av and TV.

But I do know that pre-flash will never work with manual.

This would allow you to shoot in all modes on your camera in the same dive and take advantage of the great STTL on your stobe.

Please someone correct me if im wrong
