Diver dies after surfacing ‘in distress’ off Pompano Beach, fire rescue says
A man died Wednesday after he surfaced from a dive off Pompano Beach and was experiencing a medical emergency, a city official said.

The 77-year-old man, an experienced diver with 1,000 previous dives, was with five other people onboard a charter boat about 11 minutes out from shore, Sandra King, a spokesperson for Pompano Beach Fire Rescue said. While diving with three others, he surfaced “in distress” and went into cardiac arrest once he was back on the boat.

Crew on the boat performed CPR and used an automated external defibrillator while they went back to shore, near the 2700 block of North Riverside Drive off the Hillsboro Inlet, to meet Pompano Beach Fire Rescue crews, King said. Fire rescue took the man to Broward Health North, where he was pronounced dead.

King said the group was on a charter dive boat that operates out of Sands Harbor Resort & Marina.
