Hi,
Can anyone offer advice re. whether it's worthwhile buying a compressor in the US and sending it over to Australia?

Particularly tips & tricks regarding transport.

Supply of good used units seems a bit limited over here.

Looking to spend around $2.5-$3k for something used.

Planning on fills at home, and occassionaly on a boat + remote locations - so thinking gas driven.

Maybe also a booster pump.

Thanks in advance,

John

I don't have any specific experience, well, I did ship a Kidde pump from US east coast to AUS and which weighed about 20 pounds and paid about $85US to ship via mails. No problems, delivered on time. Prices for DHL and the like would be prohibitive for your intent. They quoted a very high price even for the small item I shipped. A friend of mine shipped a couple of jetski's to Europe. They went out as freight (cargo) on a ship. I don't know how much he paid but it would not be relevant anyhow. Shipping from the US west coast to AUS would probably be cheaper so if I were you that would be the place to inquire. I suggest you look there.

I looked into this a few years ago, before I purchased either of my compressors. The freight was a killer, and in the end, the shipping costs, plus the risk of being dead on delivery convinced me not to follow through. I eventually picked up reasonable units ont he 2nd hand market here - but it took some patience. I ended up paying about $2k for a utilis, and about $5k for a pair of K14s (but one with some issues).

LOL Lorraine :)

Had to come see where you work so hard!

I had an older Capitano and booster pump lined up via eBay from near Chicago for $US2.5k but freight was the drama. The seller thought he could get it across via air cargo (a cheaper, slower way than DHL etc) but it then fell over.

The same setup new would have been well over $US10k down unda.

Sort of thinking of getting a few people together and sharing sea freight on more than one compressor.
Customs, container unloading, red tape etc. is the biggest headache with sea freight.

aghhhhhhhhh - nothing from china??? Big John (of the John and Jeff show) is your man to know there as he was talking to me once about his work and container shipments ;)

Already sniffed around re. China, seems to be a lot of low pressure compressors for industry etc. But no luck though re. 300bar compressors. Yet!

Myself and Scott have already imported Zodiac style boats, dry suits, regs and other gear from China. Can get fill whips etc. out of Taiwan too. Just need a supplier.

The cheapest way is on a ship, but you would have to check with an actual international freight company to see how to do it.

I used to get refrigerators from Italy, and the shipping was actually very reasonable as long as the delivery date was "Whenever it gets here".
