My mistake nex are mirrorless but not micro 4:3 they are dx cameras so larger sensor

The consideration about lenses and ports remain valid

Sony like to do their thing and there are already 3 types of mount for non DSLR cameras so you are limited in choice but that may or not be a problem

Here are a few from the NEX-5n. A single strobe was used in some of them. The models your looking at are better. These were shot in RAW and processed in Lightroom.

In chatting with a colleague at Adorama, they're steering towards the GX7 since the NEX-6 appears to be discontinued. Anybody see a $500 benefit to going with the GX7 over a discontinued NEX-6? I've never owned a Sony camera, are they ones an extended warranty would be recommended on?

One advantage you'd get by going with the GX7 is access to all of the micro four thirds lenses. When you buy an ILC, you're really buying into a camera system not just a camera. MFT has good choices for macro, wide angle and even a high quality fisheye. There are several mid-range zooms of varying quality too. If you feel like you only plan to use one lens, you may be happier with a camera like the RX100. The key with an ILC is being able to use the best lens for a certain scene or type of photography. In exchange for that specialization, you give up being able to do multiple things so-so.

Buying a discontinued camera is a tradeoff. On the one hand, you should be able to get a better deal on the body and the housing since the products are being discontinued. In fact, if you're not getting a deal on it, you're losing one of the few upsides to getting a discontinued model. On the downside, you're getting something that's already a couple years more obsolete. In 3 years, how will you feel about having a 5 year old model vs. a 3 year old model? It depends on your personality and how you feel about having the latest and greatest.
