I would rather service all my Apeks regs( x 5 set) than drilling a single hole into the wall!
As long as you know what you are doing it won't endanger your life.

The recommendation is that you purchase 2 sets of XTX-50, so you will have 2 DST first stages and 2 XTX-50 second stages. You will need to purchase new hoses for tech diving so the hoses that come with the regs will not be used. You will use 2 second stages and 1 first stage and keep the other second stage for when you transition to doubles. You should be able to get a deal for buying two. Remember the 5th port is optional so have them throw them in when purchasing.

I recommend watching these videos. He uses Scubapro regulators but you should get the idea.

Some seconds (like poseidon cyklon) use unusual intermediate pressure and can not be combined with other seconds or some first stages.

I'm running a ScubaPro 109 as an alternate on a Cyklon, it came that way when I bought it used. Now I'll have to try out some other seconds, in my spare time, to see how they work.

I am relatively new to this whole mixing stages thing.... is there any good website where I can get some information on which stages can be mixed and the benefits of it ?

Unless you work on your own regs, you may run into service issues if a shop dosen't work on one of the brands used, as @BurhanMuntasser pointed out. If you do work on your regs, most can be adapted, although sometimes there is no benefit.

To the OP: as I leave in SEA, I should inform you that the availability of parts for regulator brand is very limited compared to US out EU. Only a handful of brand are easily available across the region: Aqualung, Scubapro, Mares and Apeks. Others such as Atomic, Poseidon, Dive Rite and Hog are available in selected location only. Others such as Deep 6 are totally inexistant.
So if you don't expect to make the maintenance by yourself, I would recommend one of the most available brands to ensure you can find both a certified tech and the parts. And as you are planning to go to tech diving, I would go the route of Scubapro (MK17 or MK25 1st and G260 or S600 2nd) or Apeks (DS4 or DST 1st and XTX 50 2nd).
If toi plan to maintain yourself, go to the one you prefer and stock all the necessary parts/tools

For single tank, open water diving you need one first stage and two second stages. Preferably a matching set of second stages. If you anticipated getting into Technical diving, it would be a good idea to just buy two sets of 1st&2nd stage regs now, as they are cheaper purchased together.

I would try to stop thinking about the whole idea of an “octopus”. You want two second stages that are of equal capability. It’s also a good idea to start right off with your single tank kit set up for Primary Donate, generally breathing from a long 5-7’ hose as your primary, and your secondary is on a short hose and a neck bungee.

Here you can see a few options they sell packages as “streamlined open water” sets. *sold with shorter primary hoses, but they will probably upgrade to 5/7’ hose if you ask.

@caveragle i hope you can give me some advice on this setup;
i am about to get two of the $199.00 Black Friday scribble regs by deep six so i can put both second stages on one DIN first stage and dive with HP80 steel tank for about $400, and have a spare first stage for building a second reg set later.
I have heard before your suggestion of the long hose for second stage with backup second stage on a bungee. Since i am 5’2”, is there a way to know what hose lengths to order from Deep6 without trying them on?
I saw the link to DGX D6, but I’ve read elsewhere that the DGX deep 6 is not exactly the same as that sold by Deep6 website, do you know what differences might be?
I am not going Tech, saltwater deepest 80feet, with an offcenter (wing/freedom plate )inflator hose.
Any thoughts on this?

If you’re wanting to do a long hose primary, I’d recommend considering a 5ft/60” hose, if that’s an option, not a 7ft. I’m 5’5” and that 5ft long hose works beautifully for me. The 7ft was a hassle. Too much extra to deal with. No extra to deal with trying to tuck or stick under something, using the 5ft.

I am even doing tech with the 5ft long hose. Instructor doesn’t care. I’m doing open water dives and it works for my build.
