I know many people clip off their back up lights to a chest D ring and secure the other end with a bicycle inner tube. What size tube does everyone find work best? I bought one this afternoon that ended up being way too small.

I use a mountain bike tube, size 26" x 1.75"-2.125"

The width (smaller numbers) are more important than the rim size (24", 26", 29"). Avoid the narrower (1.25"-1.5") tubes as they'll be too small.

mtb tube. You do not want a "racer" or skinny tire bike tube, either a cruiser type or mtb of which you can get free at a bike shop I imagine.

What's a backup light? Used when going in reverse?

You are kidding right? If not a back up light is the light(s) you carry when diving in conditions where you need a light at all. Normal set up is a primary and two back ups. For example on night or low vis I have my Salvo 12 watt LED canister light and on the harness are two Dorcy 180 lumen LED's.

Instead of buying the Mountain Bike Tubes, head over to your local bike shop and ask them for a few of the used tubes. They will be more then happy to give you a few of them.

I would say 'normal' is a primary light and a secondary light. Three lights is more tech oriented. I haven't seen to many recreational divers out there with 12W can lights.
