Make sure you don;t use a cheap Lowes Bolt Snap, use a nice one from your LDS . . .

From a green rec diver, I put a bolt snap on my primary simply to keep it protected. As soon as the regulator is attached to the tank, both second stages are clipped and secured as is the gauge console. I can reach it if still clipped to the RH chest D ring but its only there when I'm not breathing it.

I clip off my short hose primary for long surface swims threw kelp. Have you ever tried to fin around with that grappling hook dragging below you. haha
