Reports of dead diver on Brixham seabed at Breakwater beach prompt massive air and sea search | Western Morning News
Reports of a dead diver on the seabed off the Devon coast today prompted a massive air and sea search.
Emergency services were told a party of divers had seen a dead diver on the seabed off Breakwater beach in Brixham.
The police and coastguard rescue helicopter, Torbays all weather and inshore lifeboats and police underwater team were called after a 999 report at 12.35pm.
A coastguard spokesman said: We are searching for what we believe to be a missing diver under the water at the breakwater.
The diver was seen by another group of divers who raised the alarm.
Pip Hall, Coastguard rescue sector commander for East Devon, who was co-ordinating the search, said: We are still continuing investigations as to who this person might be. We are checking on local single divers who are known to us.
There is no indication from the vehicles in the car park that the diver has come from here, although there is a report that someone was seen on the breakwater beach, but was not seen entering the water.
Three divers were in the team. Two of them came across this diver. They thought it was their friend and surfaced and then soon realised it wasnt. One of them stayed as a marker while the others came ashore, but the tide soon moved them and there has been no trace of the body.
Police said the search was likely to continue until nightfall when a review of the situation would be carried out.
Police urged members of the public to stay away from the area and asked anyone with any information to get in touch on 101.
