First off i am a beginner, I have found in my first few dives i feel.....that i don't have the freedom of movement like i should. i don't feel to comfortable. I have a Seaquest Pro QD BC and a friend of mine said that is the problem and almost has me convinced to sell it and get a Zeagle ranger of something like it. before i go and try to do this i would like to hear other divers opinions. heck it may be that i am just a beginner and just have to get used to it. but then again i remember my instructer saying that being comfortable is the key that everyone should strive for.

Can you elaborate more on how you aren't feeling comfortable?

I have a ProQD+ myself which I use extensively for teaching. Though I find the ProQD+ a bit bulky but this is because it's padding which makes it a very comfortable BCD.

If you decided to change it to something else in the end, do look into BP+Wing  setup along with your other alternatives.

I feel like i don't have a lot of freedom to move. i feel restrained for some reason. I was told the Pro QD is a very good BC which i dont doubt. but, i just get i guess a claustrophobic feeling i guess.

Does it fit properly? Do you have the strap and/or the stupid chest strap done up too tightly?

I have this BC and don't bother with the chest strap at all - hate it...should find my knife and cut it off...

Where does it feel restrictive? Does it feel restrictive empty or half inflated or fully inflated?

it fits well. and yes i use the top strap. i was maybe thinking of renting a different type of BC and see if i feel the same.

My first BC was a SeaQuest Diva, which is also a very bulky BC and I hated it. I felt like I had no freedom of movement and was restricted by the BC, so perhaps I know somewhat what you're feeling.

I got rid of the Diva 6 months later, bought a back inflate BC (Zeagle Zena) and have never looked back. The wing is on my back, there's ZERO bulk under my arms or on my chest and I feel free when I dive.

Try some other BCs, particularly back inflate ones and see if that helps.

You nailed it right on the head DiveMaven. I feel just like you describe. I guess I will be renting a few BC's before I make my next decision. I guess i will try the Zeagle Ranger first which is the one my buddy uses. (to bad he is in Ohio and im in So Cali) any other recomendations on a back inflate BC?

Back inflate bc's and bp/w's both feel like you have nothing on in the water. I have a zeagle brigade, and a bp/w, and I never dive the zeagle anymore. If any shops in your area have bp/w setups, then I'd definetly look into that. Some may tell you that they are only a tech bc, but all I dive is singles, and love my bp/w.

A few reasons I like the bp/w over the zeagle.
  • It packs better
  • makes the tank feel like its part of your body
  • More adaptable (You can use different size wings for differant kinds of diving)

I'm really a strong supporter of Zeagle products, so I'm the last person to ask about options....I'll simply suggest you check out as many Zeagle BCs as you can. ;)

If you don't want to go the BP/W route, it's hard to beat the modular design of the Zeagle for custom fit and the ability to switch out wings if needed. Zeagle makes a BC that can easily grow with you if you choose to branch out to different types of diving, and at the same time is excellent for enjoying your basic recreational dive.

I agree. In fact the zeagle & Dive rite transpac are very similar to a BP/W in the fact that they are modular. So if you decide to go with a more traditional bc, I don't think you can go wrong with either of the above.
