Hi all,

My wife and I have SeaQuest Passport BC's and I would like to make a mod...

I can't remember what thread I posted this on or who it was that gave this advice so I want to thank them first, but the suggestion was to have a loop of material inside the BC pocket so that you would be able to clip things like slate, etc inside the pocket, and when you unzip the pocket everthing would still be clipped to that loop of material inside the pocket, preventing everything from floating away on you.

I'd like to sew in a loop of nylon or similar without damaging the BC in anyway, and I'm afraid I'll nick the bladder if I'm not careful.

Has anyone made this mod before? If so what would you recommend as far as material to use (type of thread, etc.)?

Thanks for any help on this.

My BC has mesh inside the pockets, so that water drains out. I just used two short loops of bungee cord, threaded them through the mesh near the opening of each pocket, tied them off, and use those to clip things off to.

Yours may not be as simple as that. But surely you can find a spot to stitch some loops to, where there's no risk to the bladder... like anywhere on the outside part of the pocket, away from the bladder. Or even maybe to the pocket flap itself?

Thread would probably have to be nylon... no one seems to know how normal thread would work being repeatedly soaked... I've got an awl that came with heavy-duty waxed nylon thread.

I’ve got a SeaQuest but it’s a Diva and I’ve got pockets. I wanted the same thing, same reason. I had a way to secure a D in the bottom but hard to unclip from there.
I just experimented with sewing a nylon web tape (lighter material than say a tank band, more like what would be used for edge binding) securing a D ring to the upper edge of the pocket expansion gusset so no where near the bladder. I considered using a sewing awl (definitely close to bomb proof stitching) but not liking the bigger hole used upholstery needle. It did take three of them (breakage) and needle nose pliers. The upholstery needle is curved, but still was hard to get positioning as precise as I’d prefer in stiff cordura. Used a box lock stich with two rows.
Just tried yesterday so no idea if long term solution yet, but worked great – exactly what I wanted it to do. The D flips up and out of the pocket or down inside keeping the clips etc zipped in and the BC clean.

Since you mentioned cord, I have grommets near the top of one pocket and tried cord (a stiff Nylon) and bungee through them but it wasn’t working as well as I’d like. I have read ok to create grommets. My experience with self grommeting has been poor results though, very hard to get them to reliably lock together but someone said it worked fine for them.

Any chance you can take a pic of your setup redrover?

Neither my wife nor I are very good with needle and thread, I'm starting to think I need to run by the LDS and ask if it's something they would be able to do?

Ohhhkeeee, trying, LOL Be patient, it's harder than it sounds (and I thought getting a recognizable photos underwater were hard.)

Okay, best I can, hope it helps.

GREAT!!!!

Thank you! Those help a lot...
