Have you used the macro flash setting? I did not realize it had one and I was having the same problem. I have not tried more pictures since I decided to read the instruction book but will be back in the water this weekend. I also plan to try a difuser of the hamemade variety before spending the $$ on one. I think I saw on here that a plastic lid from a container of cole slaw or something similar works well. I will report back next week.

Underachiever,

I think you've got the answer I'm looking for here. Thanks!

I wasn't sure this feature existed but found this in the instruction book. Looks like all I have to do is press the LCD button to toggle back and forth between the flash mode and the flash-macro mode.

(for those curious, found this on page 11 and 61 of the DC310 manual
http://www.reefmaster.com/download/dc300manual.pdf

It appears that the flash "fires" the same as it's a slave flash and doesn't have a setting to change the brightness of it firing, but what makes the difference is that the camera in "flash macro mode" changes the exposure settings.

I still might try the diffuser (or a tupperware lid) to see how that compares.
