I've used a Sealife camera/housing and I felt much more confident that the O-ring was properly sealed after it had had a smear of grease.

I wonder why they insist on not doing it though. o_O
 
I suspect it's merely marketing, so they can say that their O-rings don't require greasing. In reality no O-rings REQUIRE greasing, though in my experience they all benefit from it. The merest trace, applied properly - if it's just slapped on it'll probably cause a leak.

One thing I never do is remove an O-ring to grease it. If it's fallen out then I clean the mating surfaces and grease the O-ring, but if not I can take it that that side of the O-ring is still making a proper seal and there's no need to disturb it.
