Hi,

I'm looking for a place that has some diving/snorkeling but also where I can see natural turtle hatchings at the beach. This is one of my goals and I'm willing to consider anywhere in the world where, for a particular season, there is consistent chance of seeing a hatch. Does anyone have any experience or suggestions?

Thanks,
Mike

You can book a sea turtle viewing in FL in the Ft. Lauderdale area, and in other areas in FL. These things sell out fast, and I've never done one, so I'm not sure if they are viewing the turtles laying, or hatching.

These viewings book up, and happen in the July timeframe.

Maybe a FL local will post with more info as I just attempted to book one, and failed while we were last there.

Sandy Point Education and Outreach

St. Croix, USVI. Access through San Juan Puerto Rico (SJU) from the mainland. Almost hourly flights daily from SJU to STX (St. Croix).

We have watched the Leatherback Turtles both lay their eggs and the Hatchlings come out of the sand and make their way to the sea. Fantastic!

We are equally attracted to the diving on St. Croix. Our favorite dive shop N2 The Blue :Dive St Croix, Scuba St Croix, St Croix dive shops, scuba dive packages to St. Croix, scuba dive virgin islands- We were residents there so can't tell you a whole lot about the lodging possibilities. If you like beach-side lodging there is the Carambola Beach Resort which was in the process of hooking into the Marriott system as we departed. And the Buccaneer out in Christiansted it is probably the nicest place to stay on the island and priced as such! If you plan on going ask Derrick or Anne at N2 for their recommendations. Also if you mention our names, they'll give you an extra 100 lbs of air FREE! ;)

Finally you may have to hook-up with a group to view the hatchlings, if so you might try to find out when the local dive club is scheduled to go...they are CRABBS DIVE CLUB WEBSITE - Home

Good Luck

South Padre Island, Texas

Sea Turtle, Inc. Contact them at Sea Turtle, Inc. South Padre Island Texas Live Sea Turtle Cam Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtle Rescue

If you want to travel further afield, Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia has this every year from about November (for laying) to March (ish). You can see the females laying on the beach and hatchlings coming out of the nest/scampering down the beach and you can head out on a boat to watch the mating behaviours (we snorkel with them every day) and beach tracks. Most dive sites here also have turtles just hanging out all year round.
