Hey,‎

In my last dive I saw a sea snake for the first time, at first I panicked because I was ‎cleaning my mask and when I opened my eyes again...guess who was there hehe.‎

It was an arm long, white with brown stripes...anyone know what type/name of this ‎snake? Is it poisonous?‎

Just asking :)‎

Sea Snakes are a beautiful creation of nature. They are a curious reptile that will swim right up to you and interact sometimes for the entire dive.

They are deadly poisonous but their fangs are way back in their mouth. The have a hard time biting us even if they tried. Your ear lobes, finger webs and a few other areas are about all the can get.

I have literally dove around and with thousands of them and have never even had one even try to bite. Enjoy them, let them take the lead, they are easy to control as to where they go and the number one rule in my book, DON’T GRAB them. A simple stroking works nicely. Let them come to you and don’t chase them around.

I looked all over the place for the snake, so my buddy can picture it but I guess it went ‎somewhere in between the rocks :(‎

The dive master said that it came right to me when I made the sudden move!!!‎

I was wearing my skin 0.5m suit, so I guess it can penetrate that eh?‎

Sorry, thought I knew knew what it was - after some research, I in fact have no idea what kind of sea snake you saw. Could be a sea krait.

If it was a sea krait, the end of the tail should not be paddle-shaped.

That's all the sea snake help I've got. Sorry. But there's only about 50 species to choose from.

I have to admit that they really scare me. :11: I know all the stuff about their teeth etc, and that they actually are very docile. I guess it's some kind of primordial fear - probably not rational either. Still, if I get to close to one then it's really hard not to panic! In Okinawa they are really small as well - there's lot's of them though. Not for me thank-you!
OK - you can all start calling me a wimp now! :D

Did it look anything like this?

As I'm no marine biologist, I can only take a layperson's guess.

I've seen a snake that matches the general description (white, dark hoops) in Australia and in The South Pacific and was told on all occassions that it was a: banded sea snake; banded sea krait, species common in various locations. I never quite figured out the difference between the two.

Where were you diving Guillotine?

I see them all day evry dive , usually they leave you alone but sometimes there pretty curious . Is this what it looked like
