Sea & Sea YS-50 (silly) strobe question

I've just got hold of one of these second hand and have tried to fit the batteries but one of the stickers saying which way to put them in has rubbed off and I am worried if I put them in the wrong way I may short something.

Has anyone got one of these?

Also, once I have switched it to on should the neon light (on the on switch) automatically come on or does it take a while to charge?

takes a while to charge then the light comes on, , the polarity of the batteries are also molded in by the little ridges you see (there are two 180 degrees opposit) on the top of the battery compartment.

Thanks for that - I've now found the polarity moulded in as you say!

How long is a little while for the lamp to come on?
