I am considering buying a Sea Quest Pro QD (my LDS sells Sea Quest BCs). Is there anyone out there who owns or uses this BC? If you don't mind my asking, how much did you pay for it and are you happy with it's performance?

Zagnut-San,

I own a SeaQuest QD Pro and paid $400.00 for it at my local dive shop several years ago. I am very happy with it--but I do not do technical diving; I do some wreck diving, but not deep penetration in craft that are not well explored. I do no cave diving, either. I do dive deep on occasion--if you consider 160-170 deep. So far, I have put about 200 dives on the QD and it remains in good shape, although a little faded (red badge of courage?). I have never had a problem with it.

I am 6', 200 lbs and use 8-10 lbs of wts, depending on the wet suit I am wearing. For me the QD has plenty of lift, but I am not trying to bring up brass fittings from a wreck!

My only complaint is the pockets--they are virtually useless since they are nearly impossible to unzip while diving. I added a Zeagle Sports Pouch to my cumberbund and that is all the "pocket" I need.

I hope this helps.

Joewr

Thank you for the response joewr. I like the vest style BCs because of the pocket space they provide. I've only tried the Pro QD on in the store(over street clothes)but, I noticed that the pockets sit awfully high up under my armpits. I figured it might be hard to get a slate, or whatever else, out of those pockets while wearing it. The LDS is asking $450.00 for it(a little cheaper if I buy a regulator with it-which I plan on doing). I'll keep researching. I appreciate your input.

If you have no qualms purchasing over the internet, I bought mine online for $315 plus postage, but seeing as your LDS has been good enough to let you try them on for size there, its a matter of conscience as to whether or not you buy from them.

8-10lbs? Crikeys, I'm 6'3" and weigh 220lb, I need closer to 30lb to keep me down (that's with a 7mm semi-dry suit)... damn love-handles!

Bengiddins,

I was under the impression that if you didn't buy your Sea Quest BC in person from an authorized dealer you voided the lifetime warranty. This is what the LDS told me and I believe I also read it on the Sea Quest website. All the websites I've checked out that feature their BCs (whatever brand) usually give the price. I've done searches for shops that sell the Sea Quest. I found several but none of them give the price of this BC. I figured it was due to this buying in person thing. Who did you purchase it from?

I purchased it from http://www.leisurepro.com - Mayer Rothstein was most helpful. Leisurepro offered me a warranty themselves equivalent to the manufacturer's warranty. I suggest you contact them for further details.

Hopefully though, buying quality equipment removes the need to ever make a warranty claim!

I think enough has been posted throughout this forum on the pros and cons of buying online, and the validity of warranties etc. If in doubt ask and get it in writing. If you're not satisfied with the assurances you receive (or maybe don't receive) from an online retailer, pay the extra and buy from a LDS.

that's my jar of pennies worth...

Hi Zag,

I also wear the Pro QD and as Joewr have a hard time with the pockets. That, IMHO, is the only problem I have had so far (knock on wood).

I would have paid about $400 for mine, but because I joined the LDS dive club and also try to purchase most of my gear from the LDS they give me anywhere from a 10% to 15% discount. Dollar wise you may be able to get it cheaper online, but when problems arise the LDS is right there to assist and you should have less surface time waiting for repairs.

I personally put service before the dollar, especially when you are talking big bucks, what's a few extra dollars.

I appreciate the replies. I really would like a BC with accessable pockets. I'm kind of looking at the Sherwood AVID also. I guess I'll keep looking. I'll let you all know what I come up with. Thanks.

I think you'll find that about the only BC pockets that you'll able access, and see what you're doing, is going to be the ones that have the pockets right in the front. You'll have a hard time seeing what's going on with any pockets that are on the side of the BC. Best thing to test this is to put the BC and your mask on, and put your second stage in your mouth, then try to get into the pockets.

My Ranger has pockets on the side as well as one almost in the center of the cumberbound. I can see into the one on the cummberbound just fine, but I can't see into the other two while diving. On the surface with just the BC on, is a different story, I can easily see into all of them. But after some practice, I can get at anything in any of them by feeling my way to what I need. The Zeagle Tech has pockets that are sold separately that are also easy to access, but it doesn't have any that are sewn onto the BC. I think joewr added one of the Tech's pockets to his QD Pro to solve his issue with pockets. Might ask him how he set it up.
