Maybe I am a total dork, but is Cabo on the Sea of Cortez? I'm a newbie and read an article about diving the S of C and wanted to look into going.
But I'm not sure where to actually fly into to get there.

Thanks so much for any pointers!

Yes and no. Cabo is on the tip of the Baja penninsula. One side is Sea of Cortez, the other is the Pacific. The diving there is pretty nice and there is at least one liveaboard that stages out of Cabo San Lucas. There are better places to go if you want to see some of the big animals of the Sea of Cortez, like La Paz, or even farther North, but you do get away from the tourist spots, hotels and clean water. I've heard kayacking is a great way to see whales.

There are airports in La Paz and Los Cabos that you can get to from LAX, I think daily.

San Carlos is suppose to be pretty good. We are thinking of going there in early October. America West flies there from both Houston and DFW via Phoenix. I found this link which has info on diving in San Carlos.

La Paz has some "great" hotel/dive packages and is right on the SC. Airfare not included in package price.

For fast small boats check out: http://www.cortezclub.com. Includes 3 dives a day and lunch. Back at the dock by 4:00 - 4:30. Taxi to town.

For slower bigger boats check out: http://www.bajaex.com. Includes 3 dives a day plus breakfast, lunch, snacks and free happy hour on the way back. Back at the dock by 7:00 - 7:30. Walking distance to town.
