Now im in the mood for a large plate of beer battered sea kitten and tartar sauce. Maybe some fries to go with it. As the saying goes: Meat is Murder. Tasty, Tasty, murder.
In anticipation of the response from some - Lighten up people.
Peta is just like Sea Shepherd. A group of people with noble end goals, and absolutely NO connection to reality. Whos whacked out plans do more damage to their cause than help.
But do they land on their fee... err... fins if you toss them into the air???
Come on folks... P.I.T.A. ... ummm... P.E.T.A. is an organization that has little contact with reality. On one hand they want remind people that we are just a part of the vast web of life and have no special privledge... yet, when we exercise our rights as the apex preditor in the food chain (... I wonder if it's ever dawned on them that ALL life feed off of other life... even at the bacterial level???)... they suddenly get hinky. PETA is *not* against hunting... they're simply against PEOPLE hunting... PETA is not against eating meat... PETA is just against PEOPLE eating meat...
In short, PETAs goal is to re-organize the food chain and move the human race to a spot just above bunnies (... and not the Monty Python "Killer Rabbit" kind either)... and just below mice... who are omnivorus...
I would also like to point out that PETA isn't all bad... they *did* bring us the popular "Got Beer" stickers... of course it was intended as a "protest" against the dairy industry... and it DID tend to get "Mothers Against Drunk Driving" all upset when these stickers started becoming "the thing" to have a college beer busts... but they WERE nicely designed and look great on my pick-up truck...
No... PETA, like all organisms on the planet, serves a purpose... I'm not really sure what the purpose is... but I'm sure they serve it well...
I'm not a fan of PETA at all, but I could get behind this Sea Kitten campaign. Never understood the "sport" of hunting, but that's just me.
And before anyone wants to flame me for "forcing my belief on others," I'm just putting a personal thought out there, that's all, no judgment on those who do hunt.
When I first heard about this I was convinced it was an Onion-type satire. But no, it is an actual PETA campaign. I have to say, PETA become more and more bat-**** crazy with each new campaign.
I too was fairly convinced of it, so I popped onto the PETA website just to remove any lingering doubts (because I have seen in the past what a bunch of morons they can be) and ... I found... "Sea Kittens" plastered all over the website.
I'm confused, is the term sea kitten used for a single type of commonly hunted fish, or fish in general? I could not help but notice that a photo of a real fish was not to be found on the campaign website (and correct me if I am wrong, I could just not find one), perhaps because it would endanger the whole "fish are kittens, too!" thing.
I looked at the PETA site (I had never heard of it before in my part of the world) and quite honestly I found it a bit silly. However, I am very sensitive to the way the world in general treats our oceans and it's inhabitants. We have quite a number of marine reserves here in New Caledonia. Some of the reserves are 15 years old and it is amazing the amount of sealife you will find. As a dive operator, I am on the water most days and it never fails to shock me to see the number of people who fish in a marine park. It has been proved that the marine parks increase the number and size of the fish in general but a lot of people tend to think only of themselves and not of the future. New Caledonia's lagoon was recently listed by UNESCO on the world heritage list. The local government now has an obligation to protect the lagoon, so illegal fishing is going to be taken very seriously. The fishermen can even have their boats seized. Personally I am very pleased that illegal fishing will be taken seriously!
So... if cute little reef fish are 'sea kittens'... would a shark be a "sea-lion? Wouldn't that confuse the REAL sealions? Maybe we could call them "sea-BIG-kitties"... or maybe "sea-pumas". How about "sea-jaguar" for barracudas? Is there such a thing as a "lake-kitten"... or maybe a "pond kitten"...
We could call anemonies "sea pretty ribbon thingies"... and we could call coral "Bob"...
