We got an SD500 for dry photography, and I want a case for U/W.

I went to the Ikelite site, and it lists a case for the SD550, but not 500. They appear to be physically identical cameras, so would this case fit, or does Ikelite make one for the 500?

Also, what about strobe compatibility for the Canon housing? I can't see things too well on the site photos.

I am looking through the archives for info on the necessity of strobes for recreational u/w photos as well. I am fairly new to this. I only have a few rolls shot, mostly with my Reefmaster (The coral Flash is the worst idea in all of history! But then I have done a lot of springs diving, so it doesn't apply well.) for basic visual memories.

You can check things out here: www.digideep.com

Or contact Ike directly on the Ikelite site and ask about your camera.

Depending on the housing you choose you should be able to use Ikelite or Inon strobes. Sea&Sea may also be an option. Sea Yoda here on SB is using an inexpensive Sunpack G Flash unit and is kind enough to put up images and his impressions on this.

I don't believe you could use the same housing:

From megapixel.net:

"At the same time as it was shipping the PowerShot SD500, Canon announced the PowerShot SD550, a camera that basically shares the same technical specifications but which is equipped with a 2.5-inch LCD monitor.

Seen from the front, the SD550 is nearly identical to the SD500; not so from the back. The larger monitor of the SD550 has required that changes be made to the controls so they fit into the smaller space. But aside from this, the SD550 retains the finishing and size of the SD500."

The SD500 takes excellent photographs for a point and shoot.

You may want to consider the Canon housing. You can always add strobes later.

Yep, that's about what the Ikelite response said. Plus, I saw a 550 over the weekend at a family party. (We should be a commercial for Canon! In about 25 people, we had 2 SD400's, an SD500, and an SD550!) The lasrger screen does shove the buttons over a bit, and I can see how it wouldn't work. Oh well. At least the decision is easier.

That looks like a perfectly good pic for my needs. I think I will go with the Canon housing. Does it give you all controls? Specifically, can you start out in pic mode, and go to movie mode, and then back?

Redhatmama- great picture, I have the same camera and housing. Can you tell me what settings you use (i.e. Exp, AWB,ISO,etc)
Thanks!
