I recently bought a Canon SD1100 P&S with UW housing.

There are several white balance settings for various lighting compensations. (fluorescent, etc) But there is no pre-set for UW.

So...my question is: Which of the Canon P&S pre-set white balance options will yield the best compensation for UW shooting?

Note: I am experienced with my Canon XT DSLR but I don't want to shoot UW with all of the manual settings on my P&S.

Just leave it in auto white balance? if you want you can try using manual white balance off your hand or the sand or other whiteish object.

Hey,

If you are using the SD1100, there is an underwater mode. If you click func/set buttow while in camera mode, you will see a list of possible shooting modes. Scroll all the way to the right (the default option in this position is "Kids & Pets." When this option is highlighted, click DISP. This will give you a second list of modes, one of which is underwater.

I have not tried it myself since I do not have a housing yet. Ironically, I found your post while searching for some opinions on the various housings. I am leaning towards the Ikelite 6147.10, but would appreciate any opinions that are out there.

Best,
Scott

On my A570, I will often set the white balance to cloudy. Seems to work well for me.

My pleasure. Which housing are you using? I am planning to get the Ikelite 6147.10, but was also looking at the Canon housing, which is cheaper. Any thoughts?

ok, great. I thought it would be a better choice but I have not actually seen both in person. Thanks for the feedback.

Hi- Auto white balance will not work underwater if you want rich saturated colors. I use cloud setting. Auto white balance is 6000 kelvin. Cloud setting is about 5400 kelvin. We have to much blue underwater already so we need to use a settting that emphasizes reds and yellow and lessons the blue. A strobe of 4800-5400 also helps get rich saturated colors. This works for macro, close focus wide angle and shots to 3 feet. After that the strobe has little affect.
